World Vegetarian Day is celebrated on October 1st of each year. It was established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978.
North American Vegetarian Society was founded in 1974 and is a non-profit educational organization. Their goal is to support their members and to inform the public about how vegetarianism benefits humans, other animals and earth. One of the ways they accomplish this is through World Vegetarian Day.
World Vegetarian Day was established “To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism.” It’s goal is to bring awareness to the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of vegetarian lifestyle. World Vegetarian Day marks the beginning of Vegetarian Awareness Month.
Each year non-vegetarians are encouraged to fill out a pledge card to go meat-free during Vegetarian Awareness Month. There are even prizes if you can maintain this lifestyle throughout the month of October.
